Each summer, we celebrate Independence Day to commemorate the adoption of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776, when the thirteen American colonies declared themselves independent from British rule. But did you know that while the Declaration of Independence was adopted on July 4, 1776, it wasn’t actually signed by all the delegates until August 2, 1776? Fourth of July Fun Facts

• Fireworks have been associated with Fourth of July celebrations since the early days of the United States. The first fireworks display recorded in the country was in Philadelphia on July 4, 1777.
• Both John Adams and Thomas Jefferson, two of the Founding Fathers and signers of the Declaration of Independence, died on July 4, 1826. This was the 50th anniversary of the adoption of the Declaration.
• The Fourth of July is a popular time for barbecues and outdoor gatherings. It is estimated that around 150 million hot dogs are consumed by Americans on this day.
• The Nathan’s Famous Hot Dog Eating Contest is held annually on the Fourth of July in Coney Island, New York. It has become a famous tradition, with contestants trying to eat as many hot dogs as possible in a given time.
• While the Fourth of July is an American holiday, it is sometimes celebrated by Americans living abroad. Firework displays and other events can be seen in various parts of the world where American communities exist.

Celebrating Our Independence

There are many different ways to celebrate the Fourth of July, like BBQs and fireworks shows. However, here are some ways to celebrate that you may not have thought of. 

• Visit a Historical Site: Take the opportunity to explore historical sites related to American independence. Visit museums, landmarks, or battlefields that hold significance in the country’s history. It can be a great educational and patriotic experience.
