Remembering Our Vietnam Veterans

Apr 09, 2023

March 29th marks Vietnam Veterans Day, a day set aside to honor and remember the men and women who served during the Vietnam War. Each year, this day gives us an opportunity to reflect on the sacrifices these brave soldiers made, and express our gratitude to them.

The Vietnam War

This 20 year long, costly conflict was fought between the communist government of North Vietnam and the government of South Vietnam, who was supported by the United States and other anti-communist allies. It was the result of the Cold War and the United States’ foreign policy of containment, which aimed to prevent the spread of communism around the world.

The United States became involved in the war in the early 1960s, sending troops to assist the South Vietnamese military. However, the conflict quickly escalated, with both sides suffering tremendous losses of life.

From the very beginning, the war was controversial with many Americans, who saw this conflict as a civil war that did not directly threaten the United States’ interests. This sparked widespread protests and demonstrations across the country, with many young people refusing to serve in the military and advocating for an end to the war.

After just under a decade of fighting, the United States signed a formal peace agreement with North Vietnam, and American troops were withdrawn from the country. The fighting continued between North and South Vietnam for two more years until North Vietnam captured the capital of South Vietnam, and reunited the country under communist rule.

Paying Tribute to Our Vietnam Veterans

The Vietnam War was the fourth deadliest war in U.S. history, with 58,220 deaths. That’s nearly 60,000 brave American men and women that gave the ultimate sacrifice in service to our country. Vietnam Veterans Day gives us each a chance to honor the courage and dedication of these soldiers, offer support and gratitude to those who returned home, and thank them for their selfless service.

There are many ways to show support for our Vietnam (and all) veterans on this day, such as:

  • Attend a local commemoration ceremony or parade
  • Reach out to a veteran in your community to express your gratitude
  • Donate to a veteran’s organization that provides support and assistance to those who served.

These small acts of kindness can make a big difference in the lives of our veterans and help us to honor their service in a meaningful way.

March 29th not only allows us to celebrate and commemorate our Vietnam veterans, it’s also a day to remember the sacrifices all of our brave men and women soldiers have made for our great country. A small way to show your support for our Vietnam and all veterans is to proudly display an American flag. You can purchase a Real American Flag, made entirely from products and materials that are certified “Made in America” to proudly display at your home. Remember to follow all proper flag etiquette when displaying your American flag.
